About NIT Silchar

Established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College, National Institute of Technology Silchar was declared an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act, 2007. Located in the culturally rich and ecologically diverse state of Assam, NIT Silchar has emerged as a beacon of technical education in Northeast India.

4-year B.Tech programs in 8 engineering disciplines with an annual intake of 800+ students. All programs are NBA accredited and follow a curriculum designed for industry relevance.

NIT Silchar is recognized as a leading research institution with annual research funding exceeding ₹25 crores from national and international agencies including DST, DBT, DRDO, and European Union.

Our research focuses on addressing regional, national, and global challenges through interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. The institute has established 15 specialized research centers and laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

  • Center for Artificial Intelligence: Developing AI solutions for agriculture, healthcare, and environmental monitoring in Northeast India.
  • Advanced Materials Research Lab: Working on nanomaterials, biomaterials, and smart materials for energy and medical applications.
  • Disaster Management Center: Research on flood prediction, earthquake-resistant structures, and climate change adaptation specific to the Himalayan region.
  • Renewable Energy Laboratory: Developing solar, wind, and biomass energy technologies suitable for rural and remote areas.

  • Patent granted for "Low-cost water purification system for arsenic-affected areas of Assam" (2023)
  • ₹4.2 crore research grant from DST for "Development of earthquake early warning system for Northeast India" (2023)

Admissions

Undergraduate Admissions

Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with minimum 75% aggregate (65% for reserved categories)

Entrance Exam: JEE (Main) through JoSAA counseling

Intake: 800+ seats across 8 B.Tech programs

Eligibility: Equivalent qualification with minimum 70% aggregate

Process: Direct admission or through DASA scheme
